Develop a habit of reading Holy Scripture Print

Developing a Habit of Reading Holy Scripture

(Reflection by Sister Laura Prokop, SSMI

Presented at the Parish Council Meeting September 22, 2008)

I am reminded of Scripture passage which I would like to use for today's reflection; it is the parable of Jesus about the rich man, the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 12, verses 16 21. If you recall, it is about a rich man who had a bountiful harvest and ran short of storage space.

What is the proper way to receive the Holy Eucharist (Communion)? Print

The proper distribution of Communion in our tradition continues to be by spoon.

1. Approach the Priest (Eucharistic Minister) with both hands over the heart in respect for the Holy Gifts. Stand close so that there is no fear of the Eucharist accidentally falling to the floor.

2. Tilt your head back slightly. Tilting too far back may cause dizziness for some people. There is also a chance that the Host may fall to the back of the throat when being received causing the person to gag and possibly involuntarily exhaling it.

3. Your mouth should be opened wide with your tongue withdrawn inside (In the Latin Church those who receive by the mouth will stick the tongue out so that the Host will rest upon it. This is not to be done in our tradition).

4. Do NOT close your mouth on the spoon. If done correctly the spoon should not even touch any part of the mouth.

5. There is no need to respond with an "Amen" after reception. This has already been done in the prayer recited by the Priest (Eucharistic Minister) and does not have to be repeated. The communicant should step away from the chalice and bless oneself with the sign of the cross and then return to their pew.
